Nothin' But Interest
Strider keeps popping up in topics over at Capcom-Unity. Christian Svensson maintains that Capcom isn't currently developing anything Strider-related, but in a recent post goes ahead and, in addition, says something intriguing:
I can say at this exact moment, there is nothing in development, but as Inafune said, we have discussed the potential for such a project. I think there's interest in it from several facets of the company.
He doesn't elaborate on what the "it" is that Capcom's interested in developing, concerning Strider, but the fact that interest is there... "from several facets"... can only be a good thing.
In other news related to Christian Svensson...
- There is a new batch of PSone games coming to PSN soon, courtesy of none other than Christian Svensson. Could Strider 2 be among them?
- In response to Christian's recent statement that Capcom's interested in doing more HD Remixed games, NihonTiger90 went ahead and asked what Capcom's new HD Remix should be. His answer? Strider. Give it a read. You know you want to.
That's it for now. Later.

Twitter-pated
So 1up.com's Retronauts tossed my SGX article a shoutout on Twitter a couple of months back:
Cool article on SuperGrafx Strider: http://www.lscmainframe.net... (Lose the inline frames, tho. 1998 is over.)
It took me a while to notice this. Mostly because I don't follow 1up.com religiously. But here's my thoughts on it:
- Thanks for the props, EGM/1up.com.
- Sorry you don't like the inline frames, guys. I'm not changing 'em.
- I find it more than a little ironic that 1up.com made a comment about my webcoding skills while linking to an article exposing EGM's shoddy journalism back in the day at the same time.
In other news, nothing on the Strider 3 front, rumored or otherwise. I don't expect to hear anything until the Bionic Commando release in July, because that's the classic gaming crowd who'd be interested in a Strider sequel.

Interview #3!
Part 3 of the LSCM's "Past Masters" interview series is up. I had a lot of fun doing this one, and it's been a long time since we've heard from him. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... Mike Varley!
Also, it turns out that the new games Capcom announced last night were ALL Resident Evil related. However, there is SOME hope still left, because Christian Svensson said in an interview with Videogamer.com that Capcom is considering ways to continue the HD Remix series:
Are we done doing HD Remixes? No we're not done. But the next ones that we do will be even better, based on what we learned.

Another Interview!
Part 2 of the LSCM's "Past Masters" interview series is up. This one's subject? NeoStrider. Enjoy.
Also, some more news about the new game to be announced at the RE5 launch: my sources are telling me it's got something to do with RE: Code Veronica, not Strider. So don't get your hopes up.

New Capcom Game Announcement @ RE5 Launch!
This Friday, Resident Evil 5 comes out. To celebrate Capcom is throwing a launch party at the Union Square GameStop in San Francisco. This looks like fun. I'd like to be there for that one, but I'm way over on the East Coast.
What does this have to do with Strider? Well, according to Kotaku, Capcom's supposedly announcing a new game at the party. So we're doing this whole song-and-dance all over again, just like we did a month ago and it turned out to be Lost Planet 2.
Still, here's hoping!

Strider's 20th!
What, you thought I'd forget? I mean, I know I tend to blow off important dates, but COME ON. This is HUGE! I've spent the last two or three months planning for this, and it almost didn't come together, but in the eleventh hour everything worked out.
What am I talking about? Well...
I tracked a bunch of the old Strider webmasters down and asked them to participate in interviews, reminiscing about Strider and its Internet fanscene, getting their opinions on recent developments, and so forth. Some of them I couldn't find. Others, I found easier than you'd think. You'll be surprised which is which.
Go on ahead and go over to the Past Masters Feature, for the first of the interviews. And enjoy.
Happy Birthday, Hiryu! Thanks, Isuke and Moto Kikaku, wherever and whoever you are! Thank you for 20 years of awesomeness.

Regarding Anniversaries
I got really, REALLY busy there for about a month. The US and A's "economic downturn" is kicking my ass. So I totally missed the LSCM's 7th anniversary, like I always seem to. I really hate blogging about blogging, anyway. It feels too much like self-congratulatory jerking off. Still, I'd like to apologize to anyone who actually was expecting a celebration. The one guy, I'd guess. I'd guess.
There is one thing coming up that I do want to celebrate. Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of the Strider series. Twenty years ago on March 7, Capcom released the CPS-1 Strider into arcades. This is something I've been planning for, and I have something special lined up. I hope you guys like it.
As far as all the Strider 3 rumors are concerned, Capcom's been eerily silent since Inafune's last interview. There've been a couple threads that popped up over on the Capcom-Unity Forums, but the employees have been keeping their mouths shut for the most part.
Maybe it's because they know I'm watching. Yeah, right. More likely, it was all the gaming blog sites that picked up on Inafune's interviews.
At any rate, check back here tomorrow and I promise I'll have something for ya. See ya then!

The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul
You may have noticed that I haven't posted in a couple of weeks. That's because Capcom's been silent since Inafune's last interview. Not a peep about Strider from them, either on Capcom-Unity or elsewhere. So there's no news. (Though there was an interesting development over in the Ask Capcom forum. Check out Rule 3 in the post I just linked.)
That doesn't mean I don't have anything for you. I somehow missed this, but a little over two weeks ago, MattG's Press The Buttons blog noted my article on the SuperGrafx port that never saw release. Thanks for the link, Matt.
Also, earlier in the week ScrewAttack posted a video by Brian of Substance TV, in which Brian reviews Mega Turrican, Strider 2, and Power Stone. Take a look:
Props to ScrewAttack for calling Strider 2 a "VERY solid" game.
Beyond that, I got nothin' for ya. Monday marks the LSCM's 7th anniversary, however, so be sure to stop by to see how we celebrate. Or even... IF WE DO.

Inafune Talks About Capcom's IP
...and by "IP" we mean "intellectual property". GameInformer.com interviewed Keiji Inafune two days ago, and he further elaborated on Capcom's strategy concerning their older properties:
GI: Within the past few years, Capcom has done a great job of revisiting older well-known--and maybe some not-so-well known--IPs, and done it in a really respectful way, rather than just doing quick and dirty Xbox Live Arcade ports of things, it's the HD remake of Street Fighter II Turbo, 1942, Bionic Commando, obviously. Is this something that Capcom plans to continue to do? It seems as though it's part of an ongoing strategy--is that very important to the company moving forward?
Inafune: Since I became the head of development for Capcom, there's really three main pillars to my approach to development. The first one is original titles. Every certain number of years we will make a certain number of original titles. Then, sequels for fans of our current series. The third one is using older IP. Really, it's a matter of granting what the fans are looking for. We started making those games and people have continued to look for them, and really there is interest out there. As you say, it's really about respecting the IP and then doing a remake that follows as an extension. Mega Man 9 is one of the games I would add to your list. We'd certainly like to continue doing more of those. The basic idea is that if there's demand out there--if there's interest out there--we will respect the IP and go forward.
That seems to be VERY good news. The rumors show there's a lot of interest in the Strider franchise, misguided though some of the rumors might be. Add that Inafune is personally interested in resurrecting Strider, and a third installment seems inevitable.
Cross your fingers.

Capcom Fighting All-Stars Footage
Thomas Leenders emailed me this morning and pointed me to GameTrailers.com, where they have some footage of Hiryu in action, as he would have appeared in the abortive Capcom Fighting All-Stars. This has a little to do with the current 2D/3D debate I mentioned last post. If they were to do a 3D Strider game, Hiryu would probably look more than a little like he does in that video. Except he'd use his Cypher more.
So, again, what do you think? 2D, or 3D? Email me.
Thanks for the link, Thomas (who voted 3D)!
