Respect the Classics, Man!
I hope everyone had a happy Fourth of July. Even if you're not American and don't celebrate it. Anyway, here's what's been going on in Strider news, recently:
- MvC2 did NOT get released on June 29, contrary to rumors flying around the Net. Capcom had to actually squelch this one themselves, via their Twitter. My sources at GameStop tell me it's going to be August 13, though that's subject to change.
- Preorder it through GameStop and you get a bonus DVD with all of the artwork and a ton of other stuff too. Yes, it's true. I ordered it myself at my local GameStop.
- To celebrate the upcoming release of MvC2, Marvel.com has been holding "showdowns" pitting one character against another. Our boy Hiryu's been put up against Juggernaut, and he's losing by 34%. Go vote in the poll and bring those numbers up!
- Capcom Classics Collection Remixed is out on PSN. You want to go buy this. Partly because it's got Strider in it, but mostly because I have my name in the credits.
I'd like to apologize for the lack of updates recently. I've gotten really busy at work. Haven't had time to keep up. This will ease off around the time MvC2 comes out on PSN, at which point I'll be doing some needed housecleaning to the LSCM and adding some new content people have emailed me. I just haven't the time to do it right now, sorry.
Updates will continue sporadically as needed, however, so stay tuned.

Ode To No One
Apparently, Capcom's second mystery game was in fact, Resident Evil for the PSP Go. It fits all the criteria. All of them. I had a sinking feeling that the reveal was going to be some kind of nasty reversal, based on a conversation I had with an acquaintance on Monday night. He hadn't heard any of the Capcom hints, and after every hint he kept saying, "Mega Man". I couldn't come up with any reason why it couldn't be one of the four Mega Man franchises, and that's when I realized I'd been set up for a massive sucker-punch.
I guess it was too much to hope that Capcom wouldn't capitalize on one of their money-printing licenses.

No More Until Tuesday?!?!?
One final comment from Capcom-Unity's Twitter:
Capcom Mystery Game #2: all (well, some) secrets will be revealed Tuesday morning! No more hints!
ARGH! Words cannot express the frustration I'm feeling right now. And I'm not the only one. Practically every game Capcom's ever made has been put forth as a possible candidate. The vast majority of people seem to think it's either going to be Onimusha 5 or Strider 3, but somewhere in the back of my mind I'm deathly, deathly afraid that all this hype is just going to add up to another Monster Hunter installment. Or worse yet, that the Marvel vs. Capcom Twitter's secret game and the Mystery Game #2 are one and the same.
Tuesday can't get here fast enough.

More About Capcom's Mystery Game
Jesus. I get sick for a week and a ton of stuff happens. I'm going to tackle each of them in order. First of all, Kousuke Toriumi celebrated his 36th birthday on May 16. He's been the go-to voice actor for Hiryu ever since Marvel vs. Capcom, in case you don't recognize his name. Thanks to Kenny for pointing that out to me via email. Happy birthday, Toriumi-san!
Second, GRiN's Ben Judd did an interview with the Guardian on the 18th, in which they asked him the following question:
Capcom seems to be enthusiastically revisiting its back catalogue at the moment, with Marvel vs Capcom, Megaman and Street Fighter all back in various forms. Are there other classic titles you have your eye on? If so, what and why?
Capcom is all about the classics. Strider, Ghosts N Goblins, Mega Man 2, Trojan, Forgotten Worlds... It just goes on and on. I love them all because they remind me of where gaming came from. A time where games weren't these massive Hollywood-esque productions but rather a nice getaway from the hardships of reality. Where pressing a button just made your character leap over a pit fall... or swing over a pit fall depending on the game...
The fact that the first Capcom IP out of Judd's mouth was Strider is kinda cool, if nothing else.
Finally, there's been a lot of talk over on the Capcom-Unity boards about Capcom's two mystery games, recently. The first game has been revealed to be Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, thanks to Nintendo Power, but the identity of the second is still a mystery. They've been more than industrious in compiling hints from the board and from Capcom-Unity's Twitter:
- is not a remake
- is an established Capcom IP
- is not Devil May Cry 5
- is something we "already know about"
- is an action game
- is being developed by Capcom Japan
- has never appeared on "this hardware"
I am about to go out of my mind here. On the one hand, my gut screams, "it's Strider!" and on the other I'm going, "Wait... could be Darkstalkers. Or Final Fight. Or Power Stone." You guys know which one I'm hoping for, but until E3 hits, we won't know for sure.
UPDATE 05/27/09: Forgot to add the bit about Capcom Japan.
UPDATE 05/28/09: Added another hint from the Twitter. Also, Christian Svensson issued a retraction of sorts:
Update... and apologies.
The thing I thought was the other game we were announcing is in fact, not being announced at E3 (the plan changed, it's being announced later). So that las game is not something you know anything about and hopefully, it will be a complete surprise. So I was wrong. You may resume speculation/your frenzy of excitement.
Folks, we have now officially entered Superman film sequel territory. This ranks up there with Bryan Singer's "not officially not involved" statement.

Capcom @ E3 2009
Thomas Leenders has brought it to my attention that yesterday on Capcom-Unity, Capcom announced the games they will be focusing on in their 5,000 sq. ft. E3 booth. And here's the list:
- Dark Void (PS3, 360, PC)
- Lost Planet 2 (currently 360, PC)
- Dead Rising 2 (will be "behind closed doors")
- Spyborgs (Wii)
- Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)
- Marvel vs Capcom 2 (digital release for PS3, 360)
- Fate Unlimited Codes (digital PSP release)
- Street Fighter IV (PC)
- Bionic Commando (PC)
- Mega Man Star Force 3 (DS)
- Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil (Wii)
- Capcom Mystery Game #1 (playable in booth!)
- Capcom Mystery Game #2 (announced at a press conference!)
...plus games from Capcom's mobile group, Capcom Interactive.
As you can see, one of the games is announcement only, BUT... one is PLAYABLE. Interesting.
UPDATE 05/11/09: Removed the bit about the BGM. It was an artifact of the previous day's entry. Sorry for any confusion, I was in a hurry.

MvsC2 on PSN and XBLA!
I'm sure you've heard about this by now. Three days ago, Christian Svensson officially announced that Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is being released to PSN and XBLA, over on Capcom-Unity. This came after months of denying that such a thing would be possible due to "rights issues" with Marvel, but it was not entirely unexpected, because the ESRB rated it for the PS3 and the 360 back in October.
Here's the DL on the upcoming release:
- It's a modified version of the Dreamcast port. No PS2 emulation involved (which I find frustrating, as I was hoping this would pave the way for PS2 backwards-compatibility on the PS3).
- Online matches will be supported, using a modified version of the SSF2THDR net code.
- HD upscaling is supported, using two different levels of sprite filtering. You can also play it in "Classic" mode.
- Widescreen is supported without cropping. The viewable area has been expanded (made possible by all of MvsC2's backgrounds being 3D), but the playable area is still 4:3.
- No unlockables. All the characters will be unlocked from the start.
- The BGM can be muted or turned off and replaced by your own custom playlists.
- There will be a demo. But only for the PSN. The demo's out TODAY, and includes the following playable characters: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Chun-Li, Ryu, and Strider Hiryu.
- The full version will be available later this summer. It will sell for $15 on PSN and 1200 MS points on XBLA.
The choice of characters is interesting, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. As Thomas Leenders wrote to me in an email:
When I first heard that I had a "one of these things is not like the other" moment. Granted, all 6 characters are iconic in their own way, but, let's face it, all of the others besides Hiryu have been seen and heard of a lot more lately, what between the forthcoming and high grossing marvel films of all three of their characters, and SFIV and Chun li's crappy feature film that wasn't high grossing.
I think Thomas is right on the money with this one. The character in the demo with the lowest profile... is our boy Hiryu. He's only popular within the Vs. series itself. It's possible that Capcom's trying to raise his profile and pique interest.
Capcom's going to announce two more titles at E3. Could a new Strider be among them? It seems likely. We'll see.

Missing Section
Somehow, in updating the LSCM to 4.0, I forgot to include a link to the Run Saber review. That's now corrected. Nothing new to speak of there, but it's accessible again.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Rob.

Stride Or Die
The guys over at Fighters Evolution have put up a Strider Hiryu tribute video entitled "Stride Or Die", featuring "combos, glitches, strategies and almost everything to do with Strider Hiryu." It's exclusively concerned with the Vs. series' version of Hiryu, but it's still awesome.
Take a look:

Not Forgotten
Man, Destructoid has been all about the Strider love, recently. This time, Namakubi's Island of Forgotten Games blog reviews Strider 2 as part of his "Ninja Month", and you can tell he just absolutely ADORED the game. Follow the link and give it a read.

Shoutouts and Rumbles
Coupla quick tidbits here...
- There is currently a "Comic Book Rumble" over at the CBR forums pitting Dante from Devil May Cry up against our boy Hiryu, because "[v]eteran Capcom character Strider is sick of the fact that Dante is being called 'The Next Strider' and challenges him to a brawl, swords and all." Don't let Hiryu down! Go vote!
- NeoRamen's Cory You reviewed the Strider series back on March 10 via his avatar "Jazz", and tossed the LSCM a shout-out by calling it "the best Strider fansite on the net". I've been familiar with Cory's work for a while now. I remember when he used to hawk his original webcomic, PockyBot, over on the old Moralos Interface. He's come a long way since then. I have no idea what his reader base is now (I'd guess somewhere below your average Penny Arcade strip), but it's pretty cool of him to give the LSCM a compliment like that, nonetheless. Thanks, Cory.
I'm out. As LadyMaverick81 would say, "On the fly, then!"
