The Strider Hiryu Manga

And so it begins......

Before the Strider games there was the manga that introduced Strider Hiryu to the world. The NES game was originally intended to be an adaptation of the manga story but after various changes were made along the way and details were lost in translation, the story in the game was only a shadow of the original manga storyline. The arcade decided to use the main character and a few minor elements while discarding the rest and throwing HIryu into a totally different world.

The original 6 parts of the manga story ran from May to October of 1988 in the "Comic Computique" magazine from Kadokawa Shoten. The title of the magazine was shortened to "Comic Comp" starting with the September 1988 issue. This is not to be confused with the "Computique" magazine later released in the mid-1990's. The entire series was collected into a single "tankouban," or graphic novel, released in November of 1988. A seperate side story, further detailing events briefly mentioned in the manga, was released in Comic Comp the following month of December, 1988. The tankouban release is long out of print and difficult to find at a fair price even in Japan.

This page is dedicated to the manga that started it all.

Tee scanslation of the manga is underway. The first three chapters are up and the remaining chapters will be posted as they are completed. The Japanese versions of the untranslated chapters will be replaced with the English versions as the translation project progresses. Enjoy!

There is an additional chapter to this manga, Strider Hiryu Gaiden, which is a prologue to the collected story ("gaiden" means "side-story"). It tells the story of how Hiryu came to leave the Striders in the first place. Kuramoto, Sheena, and Cain all make an appearance.

Unfortunately, this chapter was not included in the tankoubon (collected edition). The tankouban was released in November of 1988 to coincide with the planned release date of the Famicom game. The "Strider Hiryu Gaiden" story was released in the December 1988 issue of Comic Comp after the tankouban had already been released.

You can read more about it here and here, but only if you can read Japanese.
